In an article released by Sun Sentinel, researchers are finding that gum health is a strong indicator of overall health and vitality. In fact, periodontal disease (infection of the gums) can cause a spread of bacteria possibly leading to heart or kidney disease. They also found that it can also serve as a “red flag” of pre-existing diseases.

What are the two best ways to maintain healthy gums and teeth? Maintaining a balanced diet and developing good oral hygiene habits are proven techniques. Sun Sentinel suggests choosing foods that have omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and taking in plenty of calcium. In terms of oral hygiene, it is important to visit your dentist for regular cleanings every six months, brush your twice a day, and floss once a day.
