How To Keep Your Pearly Whites Healthy!
At Bruner Orthodontics, we highly encourage our patients to observe excellent oral hygiene in order to obtain the very best results for their smile! Taking great care of your teeth is especially important when you’re in braces. Braces do not cause tooth damage, but they can trap food particles on your teeth which can lead to plaque. Unfortunately, if plaque remains on your teeth for a long time, it can harden and become tartar. This type of buildup over time could eventually lead to gum disease, tooth decay and other serious problems.
We also advise our patients to steer away from sugary drinks and treats, and for good reason! The sugar from sweets can mix with the bacteria in your mouth, creating an organic acid that slowly breaks down the enamel of your teeth. This can cause permanent white scars and even cavities on your teeth. For this reason, brushing at least twice daily, and flossing once daily is crucial for healthy teeth. You should brush for two minutes, and go in small circles around your teeth. When flossing with braces, you will need to take your time and lace the floss through the wire. You will also want to make a “C” shape around your tooth, and use a fresh part of the floss so you don’t carry bacteria from tooth to tooth.
Last of all; be sure to visit your local dentist! Regular check-ups every six months not only help to keep you on track with your dental health, but it also helps to prevent the need of more serious and pricey procedures.
