In the News: More and More Adults Seeking Braces

In a fascinating article by the Spokesman Review, a growing number of adults are seeking ortho treatment. The article states:

“In 2010, the number of adults in braces was up 23 percent from 1989, when the American Association of Orthodontists started tracking patients by age. Nearly 1.1 million adults were in treatment in 2010.”

Why the large increase? The number one reason is health. “Research is stacking up that links poor oral health – exacerbated by crowded teeth and bad bites – to poor overall health, including cardiovascular disease and kidney disease.” James Hill, one of the patients in the article (who got braces at the age of 41) commented that “I thought I was going to be the only adult (at the orthodontist’s office), or one of few and far betweenBut it’s not the case. I’ve seen people in the chair two decades older than I am.” Hill goes on to provide a powerful testimony on the effectivness of orthodontic treatment leading the way to a healthier life.
