October – National Orthodontic Health Month
Boo!! Halloween is just around the corner! We here at Bruner Orthodontics want everyone to enjoy the holiday festivities but we also want everyone to be aware of just a few things as well. For everyone that is in orthodontic treatment, Halloween can be a dangerous time. The hard chewy, sticky or crunchy candy usually handed out can easily result in damaged or broken brackets.
What is a trick or treater that wears braces supposed to do you ask? The American Association of Orthodontics (AAO) gave a few pointers on the treats to stay away from:
*all hard candies
*all chewy candies
*caramel
*nuts
*licorice
*taffy
*jelly beans
*hard pretzels
*bubblegum
*popcorn (including unpopped kernels)
*chips
*ice
Instead they should aim for braces-friendly Halloween treat such as:
*chocolate candy (plain)
*peanut butter cups
*marshmallows
*3 musketeers
*pixie sticks
*raisinets
They’re guaranteed to put the spook back into your Halloween fun. You can also always refer back to our “No-No Foods List” for any additional information.
But make sure you don’t forget to brush and floss after any candy treats. It’s more important than ever during the Halloween season, when teeth may receive more exposure to sweets that can cause cavities.
